The signs of self abandonment
most women never name

By Jennifer Jones  ·  8 minute read  ·  Updated July 2026

Self abandonment is not dramatic. That is exactly why it goes on for years without anyone, including you, calling it what it is.

When women describe self abandonment to me, they almost never use that phrase. They say things like "I do not know what I like anymore." Or "I feel like a stranger in my own life." Or the one I hear most, said almost apologetically: "I am fine, I am just tired."

Self abandonment is the pattern where you consistently choose someone else's comfort over your own needs, and you have done it for so long that you no longer register it as a choice. It is not a dramatic betrayal. It is a slow leak.

The signs almost nobody names

The obvious version of this pattern gets talked about. The quiet version is the one that does the damage, because it looks like being a good person.

You cannot answer simple questions about yourself

Where do you want to eat. What do you want to watch. What would you do with a free Saturday. You go blank. Not because you have no preferences, but because you have not consulted them in so long that the connection has gone quiet.

You know exactly what everyone else needs

You can read the room in under four seconds. You know who is upset before they say anything. That skill is real and it is a trauma adaptation. Children who had to monitor an unpredictable adult become adults with extraordinary emotional radar and no idea what they themselves are feeling.

Rest makes you anxious

Sitting still feels like something is wrong. You reach for your phone, a task, a snack, anything. Stillness is where the unprocessed material lives, so your system has learned to keep moving.

You are exhausted in a way sleep does not fix

This is the tell. Regular tired responds to rest. Self abandonment tired does not, because it is not a sleep deficit. It is the cost of running a self you are not.

You feel resentment you immediately feel guilty about

The resentment is not a character flaw. It is your self, still in there, filing a complaint. The guilt is the pattern shutting it back down.

You keep answering people you know are draining you

You can name them. You know exactly who they are. And you pick up anyway, and then you are wrecked for two hours afterward and you cannot explain to anybody why you are so tired.

You are not overwhelmed by your life. You are overwhelmed by everything you agreed to that you never actually wanted.

What it costs your body

Here is the part that tends to get people's attention, because it moves this out of the category of self improvement and into the category of health.

70%

People with the highest levels of emotional suppression had a 70 percent higher risk of dying from cancer and a 35 percent higher risk of dying from any cause, tracked over twelve years.

In one of the most cited studies on chronic self sacrifice, long term caregivers showed inflammation markers rising about four times faster than non caregivers. Elevated IL 6 is tied to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, and frailty.

Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Read that second one carefully, because it is the one people miss. Those were caregivers. People doing something genuinely good. The research is not saying caring for others is bad. It is saying that sustained self sacrifice without resource or relief has a biological price, and the price is inflammation, and inflammation is the road to most chronic disease.

You do not get a pass on that price because your reasons were noble.

Why self care did not work

You have tried. The bath, the journal, the morning routine, the app. And it helped for about four days and then quietly stopped.

Here is why. Self care is a behavior. Self abandonment is an identity. When you take a bath while still believing your needs are an imposition, you are performing care for a self you have not agreed to value yet. The bath cannot install the belief. It can only decorate the absence of it.

This is also why so many women feel worse after a self care push. They did all the right things and still felt hollow, and now they have evidence that something is wrong with them specifically. Nothing is wrong with you. You treated an identity problem with a behavior solution.

Where this came from

Self abandonment is almost always learned in a house where somebody else's needs were louder. An unwell parent. An addicted one. A sibling who took all the oxygen. A father whose approval was conditional. A mother who needed you to be okay so she could be okay.

You adapted. You made yourself smaller and more useful, and it worked, and you got to stay. That is not weakness. That is a child correctly solving the problem in front of her with the only tools she had.

The issue is that you never got told the emergency ended.

Three ways to start coming back

1. Answer one small question a day, honestly

Not the big ones. Coffee or tea. This shirt or that one. Window open or closed. You are rebuilding a connection that has atrophied, and you rebuild it with reps, not revelations.

2. Let the resentment talk before you shame it

Next time it shows up, do not immediately apologize for it. Ask it one question: what did I agree to that I did not want. It will answer fast. It has been waiting.

3. Practice one unnecessary no

Say no to something small this week that you absolutely could have done. Not because you are unable. Because you did not want to. That is the whole point. You are proving to your nervous system that a no does not end the relationship.

It will feel disproportionately hard. That is not a sign you did it wrong. That is a measure of how long the pattern has been running.

What actually changes it

You do not fix self abandonment by trying harder to care about yourself. You fix it by going back and dealing with the belief that made abandoning yourself the safest available option, and then building an identity that does not require it.

That is slow work, and it is nearly impossible to do alone, because the pattern is invisible from inside it. You need somebody who can see it, and you need other women in the room doing the same excavation so you stop believing you are the only one.
