How to stop seeking validation
from everybody but yourself

By Jennifer Jones  ·  7 minute read  ·  Updated July 2026

If someone else's opinion can change how you feel about yourself in under a minute, you are not oversensitive. Your self worth is on a subscription plan and other people are holding the payment method.

Validation seeking is the pattern where your sense of being okay depends on external confirmation. A compliment lands and you feel real. Silence lands and you spiral. A text goes unanswered for six hours and you have quietly rewritten the entire relationship in your head.

Most people treat this as a confidence problem and go looking for confidence. That is the wrong door. This is not about how much you like yourself. It is about where your worth is stored.

What is actually happening

Psychologists studied this directly. They looked at students whose self worth was tied to their academic performance and then measured what happened physiologically when those students got a grade below what they hoped for.

Cortisol

Students with performance based self worth showed measurably elevated cortisol and an increase in physical symptoms after a disappointing grade. Not hurt feelings. Hormonal and physical change.

Research on contingencies of self worth, University of Michigan

A grade. Changed their hormone levels. Gave them physical symptoms.

Now apply that to your comment section. Your group chat. Your mother's tone on the phone. Your partner saying "it is fine" in that particular way. Your boss walking past your desk without saying good morning.

If their opinion can raise your cortisol, they are not just in your head. They are in your bloodstream.

The trap that keeps it going

Researchers were direct about the loop, and it is worth understanding because it explains why this never resolves on its own.

When your self esteem depends on validation you do not control, it is under permanent threat. Anyone can withdraw it at any moment for reasons that have nothing to do with you. So you chase it harder. You over deliver, you over explain, you post more, you make yourself more agreeable.

And the chase itself is what keeps the self esteem fragile. Every time you go get a hit of external approval, you reconfirm to yourself that this is where worth comes from. You are reinforcing the exact dependency that is hurting you.

This is why the woman with the most impressive resume in the room is often the one who feels the least real. She has been feeding the loop for twenty years and it is hungrier than ever.

Validation feels like healing. It is not.

This is the part I want you to sit with, because it is the most useful thing in this article.

When you get the reassurance, the compliment, the text back, you feel better. That feeling is real. But it is not repair. It is anesthesia. It works for about four hours and then you need another dose, and the dose has to be slightly bigger than the last one.

Anything you have to keep going back for was never a cure. It was pain management dressed up as progress.

How to tell if this is you

That last one confuses people. If it went well, why are you wrecked. Because you were not present, you were monitoring. Monitoring is labor.

What actually breaks the loop

1. Notice the four hour rule

Next time you get the validation you were fishing for, set a timer in your head. Watch how long the relief lasts. Watching the half life of it is what starts to break its authority. You cannot un see it once you have measured it.

2. Make one decision nobody knows about

Something small, done entirely for you, that you do not post, mention, or report to anyone. This feels pointless and it is not. It is the first deposit into an account only you can access.

3. Sit in the discomfort for ten minutes before you reach

When the urge hits to text, check, ask, or explain, wait ten minutes. You are not building willpower. You are proving to your nervous system that the discomfort does not kill you, which is the belief that has been running the whole show.

Where it came from

Validation seeking is installed in homes where love was performance based. Where you were praised for output and ignored otherwise. Where a parent's affection moved with your grades, your weight, your usefulness, or their mood.

A child in that house learns something completely rational: I am not loved for existing, I am loved for producing. So she produces. Forever. And she becomes, often, extremely successful and completely unable to feel it.

If you have ever hit a goal you worked years for and felt nothing, that is this. The goal cannot fill it because the goal is the wrong currency.

The work underneath

You do not fix this by getting more validation or by trying to stop caring what people think. The second one is not even possible. Humans are wired for belonging.

You fix it by relocating where your worth is stored, and that means going back to the moment it got stored outside of you, seeing it clearly, and rebuilding an identity that holds it internally. That is excavation, and it is not a mindset shift you can do in a weekend.

It is twelve weeks of structured work, honestly, and it goes faster in a room with other women doing the same thing, because part of what breaks the loop is watching somebody else stop performing and not get abandoned for it.
